Doctor Reginald Fayssoux was outstanding! To explain: I'm a 54-year-old male with recent worsening of disabling back pain that may require surgery. Because the back is complex and the implications of surgery are significant, I’ve visited several specialists in attempt to get a consensus on the best treatment. As a paramedic and kinesiologist myself, I have some knowledge of the condition and research as well. When discussing my condition with a specialist, I want to discuss and understand the “what’s” and why’s”. Unfortunately, many physicians—especially surgeons—appear to get offended and impatient in the “I’m the doctor, you don’t have a say!” mode. So, when I visited Dr. Fayssoux for an initial consult in Oct 2017, I was resigned for this sort of “Doctor v. Patient” exchange. Instead, Dr. Fayssoux was the friendliest, kindest surgeon I think I’ve ever met. First, he listened carefully to the confused story of my problem. Then “we” went through the MRI and CT scans, and he asked me if I had the time to do a quick X-Ray to check on another detail. Instead of seeming irritated or threatened by my questions, Dr. Fayssoux actually told me how nice it was to have a patient who had done some research and knew something about the body. Though we all know how physicians are under the pressure time constraints per visit, Dr. Fayssoux somehow managed to make the visit truly individualized and without the perception of pressure to get it over with: I never felt rushed. In conclusion, after discussing pros and cons, a proposed plan of action was made and we concluded the visit. Although my visit was just one of the thousands Dr. Fayssoux handles, I wanted very much to convey my gratitude and appreciation for his demeanor and caring, the “little BIG things” that make such a difference. After weeks of depression about my back and life, I left the appointment more light-hearted and happy, immediately called my wife to share the story, and promised to write about my experience.
