Robert W. Murphy,
MD., M.P.H, Desert Orthopedic Center founder and chairman, came to Eisenhower
Medical Center to practice orthopedics in 1976, from the University of
California at San Diego where he was an assistant professor of orthopedics.
His areas of specialty include total knee and total hip replacement surgery
and arthroscopic knee surgery. Dr. Murphy says he always wanted to be a doctor—well, almost always. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of an FBI agent, he could have just as easily become a lawyer. And if his mother, a composer, had had her way, he might have even followed in her footsteps. But the technical aspects of surgery came naturally to him and he decided to specialize in orthopedics. Dr. Murphy received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. After completion of his residency at the University of California at San Diego in 1974, he continued as a member of the UCSD faculty until 1976. Additionally, Dr. Murphy earned a Master’s of Public Health degree from UCLA in 2001. Dr. Murphy is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, and a member of the American College of Physician Executives. A long-time member of the Riverside County Medical Association, Dr. Murphy also belongs to the California Medical Association and the California Orthopedic Association. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the California Orthopedic Association. He also is a past chairman of the Department of Surgery at Eisenhower Medical Center. He currently serves on the Eisenhower Medical Center Board of Directors and Board of Trustees. |
